Essential WordPress Plugins — CommentLuv

commentluv-developer-license

UPDATE: CommentLuv is no longer being supported due the health of the developer. I recommend you stop using it and switch to a spam blocker like WP SpamShield.

commentluv-developer-licenseIn last week’s post, I laid out 3 reasons why I believe my blog traffic doubled in two months. One of those reasons was a plugin called CommentLuv. The free version of this plugin has been around for several years and has been downloaded over 540,000 times! The whole premise behind CommentLuv is to reward visitors for leaving a comment on your blog.

Over the years, the developer, Andy Bailey, has improved the plugin and has even created a premium version with many new features.

I got a chance to interview Andy about CommentLuv recently and quizzed him about the benefits of blog commenting, tricks for driving more traffic to your blog, dealing with the headaches of spam comments and a lot more. I didn’t pull any punches. I started off asking him about the knock on CommentLuv — that it encourages spam comments. I loved his upfront and honest answer and I think you will too!

Did you know…

Reasons why you would want to upgrade to CommentLuv Premium:

  • G.A.S.P. plugin is integrated. G.A.S.P. eliminates 99% of bot generated spam which means you don’t have to waste your time dealing with all the spam comments you are now getting. It also helps to validate trackbacks and eliminate trackback spam.
  • TwitterLink plugin is integrated. This updated plugin allows your commenters to leave their Twitter name once and have it included in all their comments. Just a little appreciation for them adding to the conversation.
  • Keyword Name bonus for approved commenters. This version of CommentLuv takes the old KeywordLuv to a whole new level giving you more control over when commenters can use keywords in their name. This is a powerful incentive to your best commenters.
  • Bonus to you when you comment on other CommentLuv blogs. You’ll have the choice of linking to either one of the 10 most recent posts on your blog or any page you choose as a favorite. That way you can link to your most relevant content to the blog post you are commenting on.
  • Advanced stats. You’ll be able to see which of your comments are receiving the most clicks back to your blog. If you notice that the readers of certain other blogs are interested in your comments, that’s a good cue to comment more on that blog.

Is your blog getting hit with comment spam? Need a boost in your blog traffic? Want a sure fire way to encourage your readers to leave a legitimate comment? The solution is CommentLuv Premium.

If you act quickly, you can get a super deal.

  1. Hey Christine,

Great interview with Andy Bailey and Debra Lloyd. I am really excited about all the great features in CommentLuv Premium, including the ability to fight comment spam, twitterlink integration, the top commentators widget, and more. Having so many features built-in will eliminate the need to install numerous plugins to do the job.

Being the WordPress security girl that I am, I really like the integration of the Growmap Anti Spambot Plugin (G.A.S.P) plugin to help combat the spambots.

  2. Hey Christine,
Thanks again for taking the time to speak with Andy and I and for joining me on my quest to bring the benefits of the premium version of the plugin.

Just as you said the plugin helped reduce comment spam on your sister’s site, I had a similar problem with my Dad’s site. Bless his heart Dad is 78 he’s an author with his own site but anything that is a problem to him immediately becomes my problem as I AM his IT dept πŸ™‚ So when spam became an issue with his site I installed CommentLuvPremium and was able to reduce spam to a level that he can manage himself.

The added benefit was that CLP has actually increased his Twitter following because now when he comments on other sites he is able to feature one of his posts and likewise can reward his followers for engaging with his blog.

As you say, genuine bloggers are typically happy to share and allow back links, but it’s really nice to know that people who take the time to read and contribute to the conversation get thanked and supported too.

With the growing importance of social proof in search results having CommentLuvPremium really allows a site owner to maximize time invested in commenting and thanks those who do invest their time to comment on yours. A genuine win-win – nothing better than that πŸ™‚

Debra — it was fun for me too. Loved the story about your Dad. These tools are great for the Junior Geek Squad :). Now that I am a CommentLuv Premium member, commenting on other blogs will be more fun (and productive).

  3. Great tips! All very true. I’m going to look at your review of the Comment Luv plugin. Thinking that’s just what I need.

    • Christine Cobb says:

Hey Karon — Thanks for commenting. I will comment more on your blog after you install it. πŸ™‚

Andy Bailey is very well known in the industry of blogging. He is one of a kind person that truly inspires me to become success like him.

  5. Andy Bailey is a person to respect. He is an entrepreneur definitely, but I can’t understand why charge now. Every body know what happened with win-zip when they began to charge, so he must be careful!!
    Great post.

    • Christine Cobb says:

Andy has free and premium versions for his plugins which as a customer I like to see. I want him to be compensated in order to keep supporting the software.

  6. OK, I’ve been using Comment Luv Premium for several weeks now and I have to say that it is KILLER when it comes to zapping spam. I’ve gone from hundreds of spam messages a week to about 6 – lolol. Love it! (Or should I say “Luv” it?!)

Thanks for turning me on to this!

    • Christine Cobb says:

I know! I’m about to install it on another site that got 53 spam comments yesterday. Spammers be gone! πŸ˜€

  7. Are you saying that I don’t need akismet plugin anymore if I have commentluv plugin?

    • Christine Cobb says:

Yep. I have it on some older sites but I don’t activate it on newer sites. In fact, I’ve had to deactivate on some sites because it was conflicting with something and causing the plugins page to load painfully slow.

  8. I have some of these, but I think I will look into a few on your list. Especially the vault press. Why do have an extra plugin for answering comments, when commentluv does that? The one thing I love about commentluv is that it will email a reply.

  9. Akismet is the best plugin for keeping safe WP from spams.I am using this plugin for a long time for all of my WP and can assure all the new bloggers that you will face no problem with it.I loved your tips. Many of the bloggers use the Google Analytic’s but they should not use it as they give no respect to user privacy so it is risky.I will prefer all to try Piwik instead of GA.It also does the same like the Google Analytics and gives great service. One more thing about it is that it gives respect to the users privacy .

  10. As i was finding the best plugins for word-press, Fortunately i got through your blog and it helped me a lot to know that which plugin would be favourable as well as beneficial for increasing traffic. Informative post !
